Rhapsody in Blue
Benjamin Grosvenor, Piano / Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, James Judd
I grew a lot as a pianist。」
(First Night of the Proms),弹李斯特协奏曲,成为Proms史上最年轻首夜音乐家。
他的音乐deserves to be heard。」

John Evans gives a five-star verdict to young and brilliant British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor s first concertos album.
Label: Decca Music Group Ltd.
One of the world’s most distinctive and sensitive pianists (20-year-old Essex-born Benjamin Grosvenor), three of music’s most startlingly inventive composers (Ravel, Saint-Saëns and Gershwin) and one of Britain’s finest orchestras (the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by James Judd) at the top of its game. What’s not to like? How about the design of the album cover? The dead-pan, tweed-suited Ben Grosvenor conveys nothing of the must-hear brilliance of this disc.
This is the young pianist’s first concerto album, one that, despite his Little Lord Fauntleroy apparel, shows Grosvenor perfectly in touch with his lighter, jazzier side. First up is Saint-Saëns’s highly charged Piano Concerto No.2, a work that mixes the Gothic with the fairground. Next, Godowsky’s exquisite solo piano arrangement of Saint-Saëns’s The Swan , busy with burbling chromaticisms under the sublime melody. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G follows next, an exotic, jazz-coloured confection with a gossamer-light second movement. It’s separated from Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, here performed in the rarely heard, pared-down arrangement made for the Paul Whiteman band, by Prelude in A minor, a piano piece which that quiet man of jazz piano, Bill Evans, could have written but which Ravel composed as a sight-reading test for his Paris Conservatoire students. Grosvenor finishes with Percy Grainger’s charming arrangement of Gershwin’s Love Walked In .
The young pianist is one of the freshest musical voices we’ve heard in a long time – a soloist sensitive to every nuance in the music
The young pianist is one of the freshest musical voices we’ve heard in a long time – a soloist sensitive to every nuance in the music, controlled but supple, one who plays as he breathes and produces a tone all his own. But this disc shows him to be a great ensemble player, too. The Saint-Saëns sounds like a showpiece but it’s a complex work full of delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra and Grosvenor thrives on it. In this regard, the Ravel sorts the men from the boys. Happily, Grosvenor’s one of the former. The RLPO soloists, in particular the brass and woodwind, are on sparkling form. I’ve never heard the work better served or more clearly recorded. And I’ve never heard the rising clarinet solo that announces the Gershwin played so confidently and evocatively. We’re in 1920s Noo Yawk, no mistake. The pared down band, including banjo, is with Grosvenor note for note. Bet Gershwin didn’t play it in a tweed suit.
